The main interior area of the ancient Greek temple dedicated exclusively to the gods. It housed the image of the god worshipped in each temple and was closed to the public. The point of reference for ceremonies and sacrifices was thus the altar situated outside of the temple. The cella was usually accessed from the eastern narrow side of the temple.
