Sanctuary on the south slope of the Acropolis dedicated to the god Dionysos. It was founded in the mid 6th cent. BC after the worship of the god was introduced from Eleutheres in Boeotia. To the north of the temple a circular area, which formed the core of the Theatre of Dionysos, was used for performing ritual ceremonies in honour of the god. During the second half of the 4th cent. BC another temple was erected south of the first one that housed the chryselephentine statue of the god, a work of Alkamenes. Outside of the temple stood an altar and a roofed portico.
