Equestrian contest related to the mythical past of Athens as its establishment is attributed to the mythical king Erichthonios, usually identified with Erechtheus. It constituted one of the most strenuous and spectacular contests and was included in the games of the celebration of the Greater Panathenaia. During the race young athletes fully armoured, called 'apobates', dismounted their chariot which was driven by a charioteer, when it was at full speed and then jumped back onto it.
