Acropolis Museum 2019 Charm

Our good luck charm for 2019 is inspired by one of the decorative details of the architecture of the first, large temple of Athens, the Hekatompedon (early 6th cent. BC). This first grand “Parthenon” signified the beginning of the great dominance of the city of Athens in the early 6th century BC. The decorative detail consists of incides, painted palmettes and lotus flowers. Υοu can see the Hekatompedon in the Archaic Gallery on the first floor.

Christmas ornament “Horse figurines”

These festive Christmas decorations are decorated with the horse design inspired from the marble horses of a metope of the Hekatompedon, the temple that was constructed around 570 BC in the same place as the later, classical Parthenon. This popular exhibit can be found in the Archaic Gallery on the first floor.

Christmas ornament “Inscription”

The design on this Christmas ornament is inspired by an inscription of 405/4 BC (Akr. 1333) in which the city of Athens pays tribute to its ally, the island of Samos. You can see the exhibit in the north wing of the first floor of the Museum.

Ceramic pomegranate

Pomegranates and their bountiful seeds have been considered symbols of prosperity, good fortune and luck since antiquity. The design of this contemporary ceramic pomegranate is inspired by that held by the Archaic Kore 593 presented making an offering to the goddess Athena (580–570 BC). This exhibit can be found in the Archaic Gallery on the first floor.

Ceramic ball

This ornamental ceramic ball is decorated with geometric designs inspired by the designs on the ceramic vessels from the Geometric Period (9th – 8th centuries BC) that are presented in Showcase 1 of the Gallery of the Acropolis Slopes on the ground floor.

Porcelain decorative wheel

This decorative item is inspired by an exhibit, a small brass wheel, a dedication made by an unknown person in the 6th century BC to the Sanctuary of the Acropolis. You can see the original in showcase 19 of the Archaic Gallery on the first floor.
