Τhe historic Silver Cup awarded to Spyros Louis to the Acropolis Museum

Wednesday, 18 March, 2015 - Monday, 11 January, 2016

Following its six-month stay at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the Silver Cup awarded to Spyros Louis is displayed again at the Acropolis Museum. The Silver Cup, designed by Michel Bréal and awarded to the Marathon Winner at the inaugural Modern Olympic Games, was acquired by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation at an international auction in 2012. The Foundation wanted to contribute to the repatriation of this extremely significant artifact for Greek history, one that is inextricably connected to the Modern Olympic Games.

The Cup will remain to the Acropolis Museum until the completion of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, where it will be permanently exhibited.

Watch the short film on the history of the 1896 Olympic Games that took place in Athens, Spyros Louis’s victory in the Marathon Race, and Michel Breal’s Silver Cup awarded to the winner. You can also read the Bréal Cup Booklet.
