Conventional term for the period that stretches between 700 and 480 BC. In Athens it was an era of intense political and social developments that led from aristocracy to tyranny and finally to democracy. At the same time it was the period that the city and the sanctuary of the Acropolis enjoyed their first big prosperity. Among the most paramount turning points of the time are Draco's legislation (621/20 BC), Solon's reforms (594 BC), the tyranny established by Peisistratos and his sons (546-514 BC), Kleisthenes' democratic reforms (508/7 BC) and the Persian Wars (490 and 480 BC).
