Rocky hill northwest of the Acropolis where, in antiquity, was the location of a criminal court known as the Areopagus Council. It was possibly named after the god Ares, who according to mythology was tried there by the Olympian Gods for the murder of Poseidon's son Alirrothios. In the 1st cent. AD, on this hill, Apostle Paul delivered a sermon to the Athenians preaching Christianity.
