Member of a collective Athenian state office. The Thesmothetae were six and along with their secretary belonged to the body of the Nine Archons. They were in charge of the proper court function, elected by lot their judges and defined the time of the cases' execution as well as their allocation to the appropriate courts. The Thesmothetae were also responsible for carefully examining the eligibility of candidate officials before the latter were appointed to their positions. If a citizen insulted a Thesmothete, he could have been deprived of his civil rights.
