Deity from Phrygia in Asia Minor identified in Greece with Rhea. She was the Great Mother of both gods and humans, goddess of fertility, vegetation, mountains and wild animals. She was also the protectress of the oikos (house) and family life, of cities and social norms. Her worship was characterised by orgiastic rites and her symbols were the lion, the drum, the phiale, the polos headgear and the turret crown. In Athens her sanctuary, the Metroon, was near the ancient Agora, in which public state archives were kept.
