Annual state official who gave his name to the year of his office and had important administrative responsibilities. In the Athenian republic, he was one of the nine Archons of the city who were elected by lot. He ensured the property of the citizens and protected family rights and those who could not defend themselves. He also organised and supervised theatrical contests, certain processions and religious festivals.
