The administrative, philosophical, educational, social, cultural and above all economic centre of ancient Athens, the area in which citizens gathered. It was located northwest of the Acropolis and was traversed by the Panathenaic Way, the road which the great procession of the Panathenaic festival followed to ascend to the Acropolis.
