Intact fusiform unguentarium found in 1957 on the Acropolis south slope. Its base is flat and a narrow groove runs around the junction with the foot. The slender neck is topped with an overhanging rim and the vessel’s lowest part is grey whereas the upper orange-coloured. This colour difference is possibly the result of misfiring. Purple horizontal bands decorate the body.
Unguentaria were used for holding and transporting perfume oils as well as various other liquids and solids, such as honey, mastic and spices. Very often fusiform unguentaria were wrapped in wicker mesh that protected them from breaking and their lid was probably made of some perishable material, like wax or cork.
