The surviving surface depicts a young man receiving his weapons before he departs for war or his military training. He is surrounded by other men, all clad in long chitons and himatia. The young man is shown naked, bending the left leg to put on his greave, while next to him are his shield and spear. Two men are standing behind him with one of them, probably bearded, getting ready to hand him a Corinthian-type helmet. On the right side of the scene, another male figure is depicted facing left while observing the rest of the figures without getting involved.
Scenes with warriors receiving their armament were very common in Attic vase-painting. The figures surrounding the protagonist are members of his close family and are usually identified as parents, siblings or other close relatives.
