The sculptures of the Acropolis Museum are masterpieces of art, valuable testimonies to the long-lasting history of the Acropolis, and a rich source of knowledge about Athenian society during the Archaic and Classical periods. But what further insights can they offer?
Join the Museum’s archaeologists in a presentation that explores the techniques of ancient sculpture. By following in the footsteps of the ancient sculptor, we explore how these sculptor works were made, uncover traces of interventions, identify mistakes and repairs, and examine evidence of restoration carried out in antiquity. Cracks, fractures, deformations, and losses of material—the marks left by time and by the adventures of these sculptures—are examined as valuable clues that contribute to their historical and technical documentation. In this way, reconstructing the full story of the sculptures—from their creation and use to their deterioration and preservation—becomes an invitation, and a challenge, to look at ancient works of art from a different perspective.
