Fragmentarily preserved base mended of three fragments, which supported a dedication. It was found in 1858 during the excavations in the eastern part of the Propylaia and possibly on it stood more than one statues.
The base featured in relief scenes with athletes on its three sides. Today the best preserved side is the left narrow side on which represented are six athletes shown after the end of the contest in which they participated. They stand in pairs and converse with each other as they remove with the strigils (scarpers) in their hands the sweat, dust and oil from their bodies. On the lowest part of the relief frame still seen are the names of three of these athletes: ΑΝΤΙΓΕΝΗΣ ΛΑΚΙΑΔΗΣ / ΙΔΟΜΕΝΕΥΣ ΟΗΘΕΝ / ΑΝΤ...... ΑΧΑ[ΡΝΕΥΣ]. As the municipality names show – Lakiades, from the deme of Lakiades, Oethen, from the deme Oe, and Acharneus, from the deme of Acharnes – the athletes belonged to the Oineis tribe. On the other narrow side which is only partly preserved is another athlete who walks serenely to the left. On the long side discernible is the upper part of five athletes’ torsos, three on the left and two on the right.
Some researchers argue that the dedication was erected after a victory by the Oineis tribe in a torch-relay race held perhaps during the Panathenaia. Nevertheless, the part of the inscription that contained the name of the dedicator has been lost and we are thus unable to know whether he was an athlete, a gymnasiarch, or a sponsor.
