7 November - 9 November 2025

International Colloquium "East Mediterranean, Aegean, Black Sea: New Approaches"

The Acropolis Museum, in collaboration with the Department of History and Archaeology of the School of Philosophy, University of Crete, and the Department of Mediterranean Studies of the University of the Aegean, organizes an international coloquium entitled "Eastern Mediterranean, Aegean, Black Sea: New Approaches", to be held on 7, 8, and 9 November 2025 at the "Dimitrios Pantermalis" Auditorium of the Acropolis Museum.

Since the 1990s, the University of Crete and the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus have undertaken a series of Conferences and Exhibitions devoted to exploring interconnections across the eastern and central Mediterranean in antiquity.

Notable examples include the international Symposia:

  • "Interconnections in the Mediterranean 2500–500 BC" (Athens, 1996),
  • "Eastern Mediterranean: Cyprus, Dodecanese, Crete, 16th–6th cent. BC" (Rethymno, 1997),
  • "Sea Routes… Interconnections in the Mediterranean, 16th–6th cent. BC" (Rethymno, 2002), and
  • "Cyprus and Aegean: Intercultural Contacts from 3000–500 BC" (Pythagoreio, Samos, 2008).

Equally significant are the international Exhibitions:

  • "Eastern Mediterranean. Cyprus – Dodecanese – Crete. 16th–6th cent. BC" (Heraklion Archaeological Museum, 1998),
  • "Sea Routes… From Sidon to Huelva. Interconnections in the Mediterranean 16th-6th c. BC", (Museum of Cycladic Art, 2003)
  • "Le Rotte di Omero", Museum of Cycladic Art (Musei Capitolini, Palazzo Caffarelli, Rome, 2001).

The forthcoming conference at the Acropolis Museum expands this long-standing field of inquiry by incorporating the Black Sea, bringing together leading academics and distinguished scholars of international renown to present new perspectives on antiquity in the Mediterranean, the Aegean, and the Black Sea.

Admission to the conference is free and open to the public.

The conference will be held in English.
