The Acropolis Museum participates in the European Heritage Days 2026 with the program “Stories of the daily life in a neighborhood of ancient Athens”. How did the inhabitants of the ancient neighborhood that spreads out underneath the Acropolis Museum live? How did they deal with their daily needs, equip their homes and worship their gods? What were the occupations of men, women and children?

A 4,500-year-old story unfolds in the streets and the ruins of the houses of the archaeological excavation, but also through the 1,150 objects –selected out of the thousands– left behind by the people who were born, lived and created in this part of ancient Athens. The archaeologists of the Museum are waiting for you to join them in discovering a charming world, distant and at the same time familiar.

The program is in line with this year’s pan-European theme “Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine”. With the construction of the new Acropolis Museum, an entire archaeological site was ‘embraced’ by the modern building, protected, preserved and showcased, creating a ‘museum beneath the museum’ and linking the stories of the gods of the Acropolis rock with those of the people who lived on its slopes.

On the occasion of this year’s celebration of the European Heritage Days, on Sunday 27 September 2026, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., entrance to the Museum exhibition areas will be free for visitors.
