Part of a kylix decorated in the red-figure technique. It was found in 1886 east of the Parthenon in two fragments that were pieced together.
The exterior depicts a deity defeating a fallen Giant, as well as another Giant crouching next to his shield. A meander band borders the scene below. In the vessel’s interior a medallion defined by a meander band presents Athena grabbing a Giant, perhaps Engelados, from the head and impaling him with her spear. The goddess wears an Attic-type helmet and an aegis with a large Gorgon head on her torso. Part of the Giant’s head is obscured by a horse’s tail which is rendered with red paint.
Two more fragments have been attributed to this same kylix. One is kept in the Acropolis Museum storerooms and the other in the National Archaeological Museum.
