The word 'council' or 'councils' on Athenian inscriptions of the Roman period denotes the assemblies of the Thesmothetae, the Gerousia, the Areopagus or the Boule. The same word in ancient Greek is employed for the members of each assembly as well as for the place in which the assembly was held.
