Epithet of goddess Athena that means first in battle. The most famous depiction of her as Promachos was the lost today bronze statue made by the sculptor Pheidias which showed the goddess armoured but in a relaxed posture. However, today the term is also used to describe depictions of the goddess in an aggressive posture ready to strike her enemy with her spear.
