The battle of the Athenians and Plataeans against the Persian invaders in 490 BC, which took place in Marathon a region of northeastern Attica. The overpowering Persian army of the mighty king Darius I, under the command of the generals Dates and Artaphernes and with the guidance of the exiled Athenian tyrant Hippias, despite its military excellence, was defeated by the Greeks thanks to the ingenious military strategy of the Athenian general Miltiades and the perseverance of the Greek warriors.
