The battle between two alliancies led by Thebes and Sparta as both cities pursued to rule over Greece. It took place in Mantinea, a region in the Peloponnese, north of Tripolis, in 362 BC. The winners were the Thebans, however, at the battle one of their most prominent politicians and generals, Epameinondas, was killed.
