Garment of thin, usually linen, fabric worn by both men and women directly over their bodies. One side of the chiton was sawn and it was belted around the waist and buttoned on the shoulders. Whether it would be sleeved or sleeveless was determined by the width of the cloth. Chitons varied in length. Short chitons were usually worn by warriors and in general those who needed to move freely.
