The Ekklesia of the Demos, that is the Citizens Assembly, was the primary state body of Classical Athens, the supreme constitutional and juridical unit that also elected the state officials of the highest rank. It was summoned more than forty times a year on the hill of the Pnyx and all adult men that were Athenian citizens could participate. Its basic duty was to approve or reject the drafts of resolutions already processed by the Council of the five hundred (Boule) that related to all sorts of state affairs. In addition the Assembly would make the final approval of death sentences and the ostracism procedure, that is the expulsion from Athens of those citizens that were considered to be dangerous for the state.
