City in the northeast Peloponnese. It was one of the most important city-states in ancient Greece with intense trade activity from as early as the Late Bronze Age. It led the 8th cent. BC Greek Colonisation and during the next two centuries reached a peak in its financial activity. After the Persian Wars Athens overtook the leading role in trade. The Romans destroyed Corinth in 146 BC but it was refounded in 44 BC as a Roman colony and in 27 BC it became the capital of the Roman province of Achaia.
