Age-old sanctuary which since the 8th cent. BC developed into a panhellenic religious and sociopolitical centre with a famous Oracle. Located on the slopes of mount Parnassus it was dedicated to the god Apollo. Its core was Apollo's temple, in the cella of which the oracles by the high priestess, the Pythia, were given. In honour of Apollo, the Pythian games were delivered, a panhellenic festival that involved musical and athletic contests.
