The conical caps worn by the Dioskouroi, the twin sons of Zeus, Castor and Pollux. The cap had a double meaning. It signified the twins' power as protectors of seamen, who also worn the pilos, whereas its shape that resembled the half of an egg-shell recalled the myth according to which the two brothers came out of the magical egg born by Leda after her union with Zeus who disguised himself as a swan in order to seduce her.
