An epigram is an inscription carved on a monument or grave. It is a type of lyric poetry, that is short poems written in an elegiac couplet. During the Hellenistic period the range of topics for epigrams was enriched and aside from dedicatory and burial ones there were also epigrams of an erotic, descriptive, hortative, satyric and philological nature.
