Temple with a unique architectural design which replaced the "Old Temple" of Athena Polias. It was constructed between 421 and 406 BC in accordance with plans probably made by the architect Mnesikles. The temple was divided into two sections. The eastern was dedicated to Athena Polias and housed her wooden cult statue; while the western was dedicated to Poseidon-Erechtheus, Hephaistos and the local hero Boutes. The Erechtheion had two porches, one on the north side and a second one on the south. These included the spots that preserved the sacred proof of the divine presence, as well as the graves of the mythical kings of Athens, Kekrops and Erechtheus. The south porch was decorated by the renowned Karyatids. The Erechtheion represented the most sacred place of worship in Athens and it was here that the Panathenaic procession reached its finale.
