The flute, called in Greek aulos, was a wind musical instrument made of various materials, such as cane, bone and metal. The single flute was a narrow cylindrical tube, made of two or more parts, with holes on its surface. Double flutes, suspended at their base, formed the diaulos. The sound of the aulos and diaulos accompanied almost all public and private ceremonies, especially the ones relating to the worship of Dionysos.
