The three Fates (Moirai) in Greek mythology were the daughters either of the Nyx, the personification of night or Zeus and Themis. They defined each person's destiny from birth until their death. The Moirai's decisions could not be altered not even by the gods. The first, Clotho, spunn the thread of life, the second, Lachesis, dispensed it by apportioning lots, and the third, Atropos, cut it off when the was time.
