Office held by well-off Athenian citizens from each tribe. Gymnasiarchs were obliged to cover the expenses for the preparation of one of the torch races that took place during the various festivals in ancient Athens. Costs may have regarded the exercise and food provision for athletes who participated as well as the purchase of oil for the torches. The liturgy of gymnasiarchia ceases at the close of the 4th cent. BC and the gymnasiarch, who from that point onwards is annually elected by the municipality becomes the administrator of the athletic facilities of the gymnasiumn.
