Roman emperor who ruled from AD 117 until his death in AD 138. He was a pacifist, protector of scholarly work and arts and admirer of Greek culture. He showed a special favour to Athens where - among other constructions - he built an aqueduct and a library and completed the unfinished Temple of Olympian Zeus. He died at the age of 62.
