The period that commences right after the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC when the multicultural Hellenistic kingdoms are established in the East. The end of the era is placed either in 146 BC, when the Romans destroy the city of Corinth, or in 30 BC, when the kingdom of the Ptolemies in Egypt comes to an end. The end of the Hellenistic period in Athens is marked by the destruction of the city by the Roman general Sulla in 86 BC. After the death of Alexander the Great Athens was under Macedonian rule. Internal political conflicts of the 3rd cent. BC resulted in the decline of the city. In 197 BC Athens sided with the Romans and a period of relative independence and prosperity followed. In the beginning of the 1st cent. BC though the city allied with the king of Pontus Mythridates and as a result Sulla besieged it and slaughtered a big part of the city population.
