One of the twelve gods of Mt. Olympus, sister and wife of Zeus, protectress of marriage. She was jealous of her husband because of his unfaithfulness and pursued with vengeance his mistresses. With Zeus she had Ares, god of war, Eileithyia, goddess of childbirth, Hebe, goddess of youth, and the god-blacksmith Hephaistos. Her symbols were the sceptre, the diadem and the pomegranate, whereas her sacred animals were the peacock and the ox.
