Olympian god, son of Zeus and the Pleiad Maia, daughter of Atlas. He was the gods' messenger, inventor of the lyre, protector of travellers, thieves, gambling and commerce. Moreover, he was the conductor of the dead to the Underworld. His symbols were the caduceus, the petasos, the winged sandals and the pouch. He was usually accompanied by the Nymphs and the goat-legged Pan.
