Open-air sanctuary dedicated to the mythical king of Athens Kekrops. It was located near the "Old Temple". Its premises were enclosed by a peribolos the upper part of which was in the form of a balustrade (parapet) decorated in relief. The peribolos also included Kekrops' grave and the monument erected to mark its location. When the "Old Temple" was replaced by the Erechtheion in the end of the 5th cent. BC, special provisions were made to maintain the Kekropeion and the grave was partly covered under the porch of the Karyatids. The Karyatids have been guarding his grave eversince.
