Athenian politician of the 6th cent. BC, member of the Alkmeonid Family. He is considered to be the father of Democracy as his political reforms at the end of the century relied on isonomia (equal rights under the law) and isegoria (equality in the right of speech). He organised the ten new tribes in which Athenian citizens were divided according to territorial instead of genealogical criteria, established the "Council of 500" and charged the Citizens Assembly with many responsibilities among which was the election of the ten generals.
