Ionic alphabet was a type of alphabet used initially by the Greeks of Asia Minor. It was disseminated between the 7th down to the 4th cent. BC in the Greek world and replaced the various pre-existent local alphabets. The Attic alphabet belongs to the Ionic alphabet that gradually, between the 7th and 4th cents. BC, replaced various local alphabets across the Greek mainland and the Agean islands. In Athens the Ionic alphabet was officially adopted for writing public texts in 403/2 BC when Eukleides was Archon.
