Conventional name attributed to an idiosyncratic small size vessel with a perforated base and an arched hollow handle. The handle opens at each end into the body of the vessel. The klepsydra was filled via the holes on the base by plunging it into liquid. When the user put his/her thumb over the single hole opened on the top of the handle, suction was created, preventing thus the liquid from running out of the vessel. By opening the hole the liquid was released from the pierced base. The precise use of the klepsydras is not certain. It has been suggested that they were either employed for ritual sprinkling, during libations to the deceased or chthonic deities or vessels for lifting wine or oil out of a big storage pot and sieving it.
