British archaeologist, architect and painter who lived in the 18th cent. He was a Hellenist as well as a pioneer in Neoclassical architecture. Together with N. Revett, who was also an archaeologist and architect, Stuart traveled in Athens where they both studied and drew ancient remains. Their work "The Antiquities of Athens" soon became a work of reference in the studies of ancient Greek architecture.
