The Kore (plural Korai) is a marble statue of a young girl with lavish garments, rich ornaments and elaborate hairstyle, a distinctive creation of Archaic sculpture. The Korai have been interpreted in various ways: goddesses, priestesses, girls that served the goddess or participated in public festivals and ceremonies. Most of them were dedications of wealthy people in sanctuaries of female deities, whereas some of them stood over girls' graves. The majority of the Korai was found on the Acropolis. Smaller scale depictions of Korai were made of other materials, such as bronze and clay.
