Open vessel, usually of big size, with two handles. It was used for mixing wine with water as in antiquity wine was drunk diluted with water. During the Geometric period kraters also acquired a funerary character and they were used as grave markers for members of the Athenian aristocracy. Later on, in the Archaic and Classical period their role was mostly functional since kraters were related closely to the symposia held by the reigning class.
