Mythical king of Athens and archetypal figure of primordial significance for the Athenians. He was born by Gaia (Earth) and the lower part of his body was in the form of a snake tail. Athenians attributed to Kekrops the constitution of several laws, the invention of writing, the first population census, the prohibition of human sacrifices and the internment of the dead. Kekrops was also the judge that decided the outcome of the dispute between Athena and Poseidon over the patronage of the city of Athens.
