The late Roman-early Byzantine period begins in Athens after the invasion of the Heruli in AD 267 and lasts until the 6th cent. AD when the decree of emperor Justinian which forbade teaching Law and Philosophy in Athens (AD 529) was issued and the Slavs invaded southern Greece (AD 582/3). In AD 391 Theodosius I issued a decree for the closing of ancient temples and the Acropolis was gradually turned into a fortress and a Christian sanctuary. Around the beginning of the 5th cent. AD building activity peaks in the city of Athens.
