The lebes (pl. lebetes) is a big open hemispheric vessel with wide mouth and rounded underside. It had no foot but instead mounted on a stand or was incorporated into a tripod. It was made of clay or metal and was used for mixing wine with water. Bronze lebetes were usually used as cooking vessels as well. Luxurious lebetes were given as contest prizes or dedicated at sanctuaries.
