Daughter of the king of Iolcus, Pelias, and wife of Admetus, king of Pherae in Thessaly. She became a symbol of wifely devotion as she consented to die in Admetus' place. The gods recognised her self-sacrifice and brought her back to life. According to a different version of the myth, after Herakles wrestled with Death brought her back from the Underworld.
