An antefix is a special roof-tile that has a vertical surface, usually decorated in relief. The tile is placed on the outermost edges of roofs, in front of the last row of roof-tiles, as well as at the endings of the ridge created in the middle of a roof consisting of two slanting sides. Antefixes, apart from their decorative value, had a practical function as they prevented rainwater from leaking through the roof and wind from blowing the rest of the roof-tiles away. Moreover, they stopped birds and snakes from entering the roof and making their nests there.
